iPhone 2.0 Original App Icons

well…. i noticed that the cracked apps for iPhone 2.0 have shitty square icons without the effect and shine that we iPhone users have so gotten used to.. made my Springboard look real bad.. i can’t stand that you know..
so after much effort and a lot of coding to automate the process i present to you..
iPhone 2.0 App Original Icons from iTunes
[these are icons with rounded corners and shine. the way they look in iTunes and the way they're supposed to look on the iPhone because after all i pulled them outta the iTunes XML files.. :D ]
these will definitely make your Springboard look better..

people who are cracking the apps may feel free to use these icons in the app folder before distribution.
:)

installation:
1. select the icon you need
2. use WinSCP or Fugu to connect to your iPhone
3. browse to /Applications/
4. open the Application.app folder that you wanna change the icon for
5. rename the icon.png file there, add .bak to the end
6. place the new icon and rename it, giving it the same name as the older icon file taking uppercase of lowercase letters in consideration.
[icon.png is not Icon.png is not ICON.png]
7. set perms 775
8. respring/reboot your iPhone
9. enjoy..

UPDATE: the latest update is the one i downloaded on 1st september.. i just checked again and the batch script i made for the purpose does not work anymore. so i can’t promise any more updates after this.. i’ll try to work out another method.. but i strongly suggest people to switch to the MobileInstallation patch method. it makes your life easy.. the icon archive includes all icons requested in the comments above. :)

    Shubham, that was covered in some places.

    To get high res versions of the pictures for use as iTunesArtwork or the higher res icons, you locate the app in itunes.

    Get the itunes url by right clicking on the icon of the app.

    Paste the url in your browser but change the host to ax.phobos.apple.com.edgesuite.net
    Something like… from http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=284602850&mt=8 to http://ax.phobos.apple.com.edgesuite.net/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=284602850&mt=8

    Once there, you’ll see an xml based page. Locate a url with 100×100-75.jpg and copy the url.

    That is the icon in 100×100 res. You can change it to 512×512 for the higher res non-icon picture for use as the iTunesArtwork file. Both resolutions support jpg and png extensions.

    I’m just wondering if there’s a way to get the iphone/ipod touch sized icons. ie 60×60.

    i’m uploading all iTunes Artwork to Box.net right now, will post link when done..

    @pegasus21: you are right about the process..

    these are my exact steps:
    1. set iTunes to go through a proxy so i could check the exact requests being made. i use Privoxy. with Tor ;)
    2. checked out the request when i clicked “All iPhone Apps” in iTunes

    this turned out to return XML data
    3. each XML request gives 21 apps
    http://ax.phobos.apple.com.edgesuite.net/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewRoom?fcId=285119007&sortMode=2&id=25204&batchNumber=1
    batchNumber starts from 1 and goes upto the number of pages in iTunes’ All iPhone Apps section [currently 51]
    4. i used Batch Download in Firefox to get all these XML files.
    5. i went through one of these XML files and identified lines that have the URL to the icon and the corresponding Application name.
    6. wrote a script in PHP to automaticaly process these 50+ XML files and download images and rename them to corresponding App names.
    7. the XML files have image URLs like
    http://a1.phobos.apple.com/us/r30/Purple/af/b9/2b/mzl.bflitfxz.75×75-65.jpg
    8. replaced .jpg in URL with .png to get icon with rounded corners
    http://a1.phobos.apple.com/us/r30/Purple/af/b9/2b/mzl.bflitfxz.75×75-65.png
    9. replaced 75×75-65 with 100×100-75 to get 100×100 rounded corner icons
    http://a1.phobos.apple.com/us/r30/Purple/af/b9/2b/mzl.bflitfxz.100×100-75.png
    9. replaced 100×100-75 with 512×512-75 to get 512×512 iTunes Artwork for the app.

    10. used XnView to batch resize 75×75 icons to 57×57.

    @inHuman: how small are they? can you post a screenshot? i just checked the native app icons they are 59×60 with 1px shadow on either sides and 3px on the bottom that makes them 57×57 effectively..
    thought if it helps here’s AppStore Original Icons 75×75
    you can resize these to any size you like though i think anything over 60×60 will be much too big..
    XnView is a nice image browser that will let you batch resize these icons
    :)

    It actually doesn’t look to small it seems that the icon is to close to the name of the app and when i use wiggle to move the apps the sides of it get messed up
